The Maintenance Free Advantage of Cheap Car Batteries

The older batteries needed the fluid level checked regularly and by using a hydrometer, the acidity tested in them periodically. With advances in storage battery technology, the maintenance free battery was evolved in to being, making this a much more desirable addition to a vehicle.
Maintenance free batteries need no fluid level monitoring whatsoever. These cheap car batteries can be taken care of over their lifetime by simply keeping the terminals clean and the top wiped off. This is a far cry from the older ones that had the owners handling battery acid in their driveways and garages.
The terminals on these cheap car batteries must be kept clean from rust and corrosion. This is a simple matter of removing the battery cables and using a wire brush or battery terminal cleaning tool once in awhile. This insures a good contact between the cable and battery for optimum cranking amps to reach the engine and allows the alternator to recharge the battery on a regular basis.
When performing this task, be sure to unhook the positive side of the battery first, leaving the battery itself grounded. Then remove the negative side cable and clean both posts thoroughly as well as the inside of the cable ends, then simply reverse the steps to reconnect the battery. For side post batteries, using a wire brush, clean the entire surface at the connection as well as the bolt threads that go to the battery.
Most auto part stores have battery terminal cleaner available to assist in the removal of rust and corrosion. They also will have connection coatings that aid in the prevention of this and assist in better connectivity between the post and clamp. Many manufacturers recommend using some type of cleaner when performing this procedure.
